Lauren M. Whaley, Multimedia Reporter, The Center for Health Reporting, and attendee of NAKFI’s 2009 Synthetic Biology Conference alerted NAKFI to the launch of a new website taking aim at fundamental health-care issues facing Californians: www.centerforhealthreporting.org. The center operates out of the USC Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism and is funded by the California HealthCare Foundation, with a three-year, $3.285 million grant.
Lauren Whaley participated in NAKFI’s 2009 Conference on Synthetic Biology as a Graduate Science Writing Students. NAKFI cultivates science writers of the future by inviting graduate students from science writing programs across the country to attend its annual conference and develop discussion summaries and a conference overview for publication following the conference. Students are elected by the department director or designee, and prepare for the conference by reviewing the Webcast tutorials and suggested reading, and selecting a task group in which they'd like to participate. Approximately one month ago, Lauren accepted a position at The Center for Health Reporting, where she will be shooting video and photography and producing audio stores. She will also be covering “Environmental Health.” For more information about the center, or to suggest a story idea, please visit http://www.centerforhealthreporting.org.
