In 2010, Synthetic Biology conference attendee, Huimin Zhao, was awarded a $100,000 Futures Grant to explore genome mining of novel natural products via synthetic biology. In connection with this research Dr. Zhao recently published papers in WIREs Systems Biology & Medicine and Molecular Biosystems.
Zhao's grant aims to develop a new synthetic biology strategy to discover novel natural products from sequenced genomes and metagenomes. Dr. Zhao recently published two papers on this research: "Synthetic Biology: Putting Synthesis into Biology" in Volume 3 January/February 2011 issue of WIREs Systems Biology & Medicine and "Rapid Characterization and Engineering of Natural Product Biosynthetic Pathways via DNA Assembler" in Issue 4, 2011 of Molecular BioSystems.
