Nanoscience and Nanotechnology
November 19-21, 2004
Four overarching questions were addressed at the nanoscience conference:
  • What is the most significant problem that can be overcome in the next decade by merging cell biology and physical machines, and how?
  • What are the most significant fundamental questions in biology that can be addressed by the merger of biology and physical machines?
  • What are the limits on conventional medicine/biotechnology that can only be overcome through nano approaches?
  • What are the ethical, scientific, and societal implications of the merger of cell biology and physical machines?

In addition, three overall themes were identified:
  • The future of nanomedicine,
  • The cell-nanomachine interface, and
  • Design, generation, and manufacturing of new nanomachines and nanosystems.
