NAKFI 2008 - Complex Systems

James B. Bassingthwaighte

Dr. Bassingthwaighte is Professor of Bioengineering, and Adjunct in Radiology at the University of Washington. He is a leader in computational and integrative physiology, with research focused on quantitative and integrative approaches to cardiovascular, respiratory, and cellular physiology.  He trained in Physiology and Biochemistry (University of Toronto, B.A. 1951), Medicine (University of Toronto, M.D. 1955), cardiology (Mayo Graduate School of Medicine, Rochester, Minnesota), and physiology (Ph.D., University of Minnesota, 1964). He was on the faculty of the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine from 1964 to 1975, becoming Professor of Medicine and Physiology in 1973. Moving to the University of Washington in 1975, he chaired the Department of Bioengineering until 1980. In 1979 he established a National Simulation Resource Facility in Circulatory Mass Transport and Exchange at the University of Washington, a center for research and development of methods of modeling analysis, which he applied o cardiovascular studies. In 1997 he initiated the Human Physiome projects with the goal to define quantitative descriptions of human physiology, and works in international efforts to organize and integrate physiological knowledge from genome to integrated function. He has authored 260 peer-reviewed publications and two books, served as President of the Biomedical Engineering Society and the Microcirculatory Society, chaired the Cardiovascular Section of the American Physiological Society, and was the editor-in-chief of the Annals of Biomedical Engineering. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, and has been the recipient of honors from BMES, American Physiological Society, The Netherlands Biophysical Society, the Cardiovascular Systems Dynamics Society, the Microcirculatory Society and McGill University.
