Babak Parviz, University of Washington

In 2007 he was on the cover of Genome Technology magazine as a rising star investigator and selected by the MIT Technology Review Magazine as one of the top 35 innovators in the world under the age of 35. His work on “bionic contact lenses” earned recognition as one of the best inventions of 2008 by Time magazine. Babak Parviz is an associate professor in the University of Washington Electrical Engineering department. He was selected to attend NAKFI conferences in 2004 (Nanostructures) and 2005 (Genomics) and was awarded a $75,000 seed grant from the program for the development of new sensing mechanisms that will provide powerful tools for furthering the understanding of biology at the small scale and extending the link between the genomic information, observable traits and eventual disease.
